Kate McGhie has made a career out of food. She has cooked it, written about it, talked about it, and has even travelled to every corner of the world to discover more about it. In every sense, she has become an authority on the subject.
Her hard work has brought a rich yield. Her weekly food column in Melbourne’s top selling Herald Sun newspaper reaches some 1.5 million readers. The success of the column, which has become interactive, also spawned ‘Cook’, Kate’s new book on the publishing block.
The book, which features 250 broad-ranging recipes, reflects its author’s passionately earthy approach to the art of cooking where she challenges even the most tentative of cooks to dare to be greater. It is simple sophistication at its best.
Kate’s cooking life began in an ordinary way on a Victorian farm listening and watching as two extraordinary women, her mother and grandmother, exchanged the divine secrets of recipes.
They taught her the basics of cooking and the art of turning a meal into a celebration of food. Meals where pickled meat was encased in mustard pastry, rose petal and lavender conserves, or hams smoked in a special chimney, were pretty standard fare at her childhood home.
Inspired by these two early teachers, Kate determined to learn more and her move to Switzerland, where she studied to become a chef, also triggered a love affair with travel. She married the two loves of her working life and used the travel over ensuing years to discover more about foods of the world.
The result of her culinary forays to destinations as diverse as the Amazon, Italy and Morocco, has created a hugely rich personal larder. It has also spawned for her a career as a public speaker that is very much in demand for meetings and conferences.
Her international reputation was secured when she trained the first two Australian apprentice cooks to win gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 World Culinary Olympics in Frankfurt, Germany.
She has won a number of awards including the 2002 Best Writer in culinary tourism at the Australian Food Media Awards.
